The Cook Islands

Welcome to the Cook Islands and the middle of no-where! In fact the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Here's a confusing tale of time for you all. We flew on Saturday 30th at 2pm from New Zealand and landed in Rarotonga, the largest of the Cook Islands, on Friday 29th at 10.40pm. When we woke the next day, it was Saturday the 30th all over again, which made that particular Saturday, the longest Saturday of my life, literally. When we left New Zealand, we were 13 hours ahead of you guys and now we're 10 hours behind you, so while you were all celebrating midnight and 2007, we were sunbathing by our pool at 2pm New Years Eve! How weird is that? Answers on a postcard, even though I know how and why, I'm still confused :)
Rarotonga is 32k in diameter and takes 2 hours to ride around the whole island on a bike, apparently. The island is surrounded on all sides by a reef which looks amazing and will get some pics up soon. There are about 15 islands that people live on in the group, but probably loads of other smaller ones too, Rarotonga has a population of about 18,000, but you see very few people walking around, one of the other islands I saw in the LP, has a population of 2 :)
Since we got here 2-3 days ago, the most we have done is get our lazy bums out onto the sun loungers by the pool, the only exception was last night, New Years, when we managed to drag ourselves to the beach for some late night drinks. It was a very pleasant affair, me and Samantha, some cheap fizz and the odd hound, Sam has indeed now started making friends with dogs again. It was pretty cool sitting on a beach in the South Pacific, something that dreams are made of really and here we were living that dream, kinda weird :)
Happy New Year to you all and we'll see you in 2 weeks!!!

It was fantastic game and you can imagine the expletives coming from im indoors as they lost valuable points at crucial time .
Sounds like you are having a great time and the tongans are great fun and mad about their rugby and their food .
Enjoy and having windy time here in Costa del Crawley.

I'm so jealous. Don't come back -it's cold and horrible in England. Stay in the Cooks!

Happy New Year, hope you have lots of fun on Raro. Are you planning seeing any other islands?

Zoe: I haven't even seen the highlights, but I'm certain we deserved to win :)

Tim: Happy New year, rather enjoying these Cook Islands especially now we've got a Moped, have at last dragged ourselves away from the pool, who knows we may even go and see the beach tomorrow :)
Doubt we'll make the other islands, probably spend the cash on diving and eating me thinks.

I'm glad you've explained where the cook islands are.

My scarf is lovely, How can you bear to deal with the wool in such hot weather? You may as well settle down under a horsehair blanket!

Tim: Will check it out, off to Windjammer tonight, should be good.

Master: I've told her about the wool, but you know her ocd, Im not quite sure how she can bear the heat!

Hiya,

Certainly do hate the spam comments!

(get rid of the rubbish). We'd love to meet up for a beer if we're ever in your neck of the woods. Similarly if you ever visit wherever we are (currently sunny Lowestoft) then the same offer is extended.

If you fancy a bit of snorkelling, up by Fruits of Rarotonga is a good spot for fish.

Hey you two...

Can't believe you are due back, although your blog really covers the amazing places you have seen and the special experiences you have had which couldn't possibly be covered in less than a year.

You will both remember this experience so vividly for the rest of your lives.

Congratulations on the engagement, has Andy turned into a hopeless romantic now?! you couldnt of picked a more wonderous place if you tried (perfect)

Hope to catch up for a drink if you return to not so sunny Brighton, it would be great to see you both.

I hope you are now going into travel journalism as although your blog is a great keepsake it is also a masterpiece of humour, history, geography and photography. The writing makes the reader truly imagine the experience of the sights, smells and ridiculous situations you find yourself in when travelling our rich tapestry of a world!

Safe journey home

Love Jeni xxx
